Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy can treat a range of sports and acute injuries by stimulating the tendon or ligament to engage in collagen formation, thus kicking off the healing process, and getting you out of pain. Come in and share your story with us. Our trained staff will get you feeling better—FAST!
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is your own body’s blood plasma with concentrated platelets. Platelets are really good cells located in your blood. These platelets contain natural sources of growth factors, proteins and cytokines that stimulate the healing of bone and soft tissues. So, if you think of your blood like one of those nesting Russian dolls, the first one is your blood, inside that is your plasma, inside the plasma are platelets, and the next doll, the jackpot doll, contains growth factors, proteins, and cytokines.
Growth factors provide numerous ways of assisting cellular repair. One of those ways is as a biological communication tower that signals the body’s immune system to get busy. Growth factors also decrease inflammation and improve cell growth.
If we needed salt for a cake we were baking and had nothing but ocean water available to us, we could gather a large amount of ocean water and boil it down until all that remained was the salt. But, if instead of adding that one teaspoon of salt to the cake mix, we added a gallon of ocean water, we would get some salt but not enough for the recipe. Gathering the “salt,” or Plasma Rich Platelets, from the blood is similar in that we need to siphon off the key ingredient from the blood (ocean water) so we are left with the platelets that contain all the healing stuff. The way this is done is by spinning the blood. A small amount of blood is taken from the patient and is then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins and, through a multi-functional process, separates out a layer of platelets. This can increase the concentration of platelets and growth factors up to 400 to 600%.
Those growth factors, proteins, and cytokines initiate and regulate basic aspects of natural wound healing. Enhanced healing is possible when platelet concentration is increased with PRP. Activated platelets “signal” to distant repair cells to come to the injury site.
When PRP is injected into the damaged area, it stimulates the tendon or ligament to engage in collagen formation, thereby beginning the healing process. As a result, new collagen begins to develop. The new collagen synthesis at the injury site and quickly begins the repair process.
There is little chance for rejection or allergic reaction to PRP because the substance comes from the patient’s own body. The PRP injection carries far less chance for infection than an incision, leaves no scar, and only takes about 20 minutes.
As a standalone treatment, PRP is best used to treat acute soft tissue injuries. It is also used in conjunction with stem cell therapy to help provide the necessary growth factors and maximize healing potential.
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy can potentially treat a range of sports and acute injuries resulting in joint, tendon, and ligament pain. Soft tissue injuries are most responsive to PRP treatment. The following is a representative, non-exhaustive sample:
