Responsible for balance and stability and in constant demand, your knees bear the most weight of any joint in your body. And so, it stands to reason they are also the joints most prone to injury. Knee injury and knee pain are usually attributed to improper functioning and damage sustained to the complex structure of the cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the knee.

Knee Pain Symptoms

Pain in the back of the knee indicate damage that is unique and different from pain experienced in the front of the knee. Likewise, pain felt on the outside of the knee demonstrates a different condition than if the pain is on the inside of the knee.  Severe knee pain when running, walking, going up and down stairs, and even knee pain while sitting are all frequent complaints.

In addition to knee pain symptoms, weakness and instability are very common. Stiffness in the knee or a locking sensation may prevent you from fully extending or bending the knee. Popping, clicking, or grinding sounds when kneeling or squatting may indicate knee damage if knee pain is also present.

What Causes Knee Pain?

Poor posture, carrying an excessive amount of weight on your frame, arthritis, gout, sprains, strains, IT band issues, and years of overuse can all cause knee pain. Athletes who regularly participate in high-impact sports place extreme demands on their knees by twisting, pivoting, and making sudden stops and starts.

Like other joint problems, knee damage and knee pain are the result of either specific injury or wear and tear. Biomechanical abnormalities can occur from overuse, imbalances in other areas of the body, or injury compensation; each can impair proper knee function.

Treating Knee Pain

At Precision Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine, we analyze your total musculoskeletal functioning, not just your specific knee pain symptoms. Knee pain treatment is approached with a highly effective combination of therapies, integrating the strengthening and stretching benefits of physical therapy with chiropractic expertise to correct imbalances and improper functioning.

Muscle strengthening, particularly of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, will aid in stabilizing the knee and improving balance. But for optimal knee performance, overall imbalances must be addressed. Leg strengthening alone will not eliminate the pain and could leave you susceptible to more serious injury. That’s why our holistic approach is so effective. Joint support taping, soft tissue treatment, and laser light therapy can all assist in restoring peak functioning, as well as other state-of-the-art, research-based sports medicine techniques:
