While extremely common, back pain is not normal. Not only is it not a natural part of living or aging, it is highly treatable. Low back pain affects 85% of adults at some time in their lives. Many of those people will turn to medication or even surgery. However, the body is inherently cooperative and chiropractic care is uniquely poised to offer relief from back pain. Many people turn to over the counter painkillers or ask their doctor for a prescription, but research shows that chiropractic care is one of the safest and most effective solutions for back pain.

Symptoms Associated with a Back Condition

Depending on the injury and location, back pain can present in a multitude of ways in the body, not always in the back. The low back is exceptionally susceptible to injury and pain due to the complex structure of the spine. Pain in the low back often presents with a sharp, pinching pain upon movement. The following is a list of symptoms you may be experiencing, and for which chiropractic care would be a beneficial mode of therapy:

  • Muscle Ache or Weakness
  • Shooting or Stabbing Pain
  • Pain that Radiates Down the Leg
  • Pain that worsens with bending, lifting, standing or walking
  • Pain that improves with reclining
  • Tingling or Numbness in the Pelvis, Legs, or Feet
  • Weakness in the Legs or Feet
  • Calf Cramps

Possible Causes of Back Pain

When you consider that the low back supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday motions such as bending and twisting, it might not be surprising that things can get out of alignment from time to time. Furthermore, muscles in the low back are responsible for flexing and rotating the hips while walking, as well as supporting the spinal column. Nerves in the low back supply sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

But truly, the back is a highly functioning structure and most acute low back pain results from injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs. The body also reacts to injury by initiating an inflammatory healing response. While inflammation sounds minor, it can cause severe pain.

The following is a partial list of back conditions, all of which we treat in our office:

  • Sciatica
  • Disc herniations and bulges
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Facet arthritis
  • Foraminal Stenosis
  • Lumbar Strain/Sprains
  • Sacro-iliac (SI) joint dysfunction
  • Psoas tendonitis and spasms
